Roslyn Grafstein has been an active resident in the community since moving to Madison Heights in 2004. Since being elected to Council in 2017, she has been active bringing about environmental change and working to make the city more business friendly.
There's much to see here.
So, take your time, look around, and learn all there is to know about Roslyn.
I am a community advocate, volunteer, wife and mother dedicated to the healthy growth of our community.
I have lived with my husband in Madison Heights since 2004 when I moved from Toronto (Canada) and we are the proud parents of two daughters who attended school in the city. until last year when our oldest left for college. In September our youngest will also be headed to college out of the area. Twenty years ago we chose to live and raise our family in Madison Heights because of its charm, affordability, location, safety, and friendly neighborhoods. Having no family in the state, our friends and neighbors soon became our family of choice and the village that helped us raise our children.
I am a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) with an Economics degree and broad base of experience working in investment management, wealth management and financial management.
Serving the public and connecting with people is important to me and is reflected in my long history of service to the community with activities that include Girl Scout leader, robotics team coach, school room parent, Parks and Recreation Advisory board member, member of the Madison Heights Women’s Club and Charter member of the Madison Heights Moms Club International.
Since being elected to council in 2017, I have been the School City Liaison and the council representative for the Friends of Madison Heights Youth, Crime Commission, Youth Assistance and Madison Heights Community Coalition. I also revived the Environmental Citizen Committee (ECC) and was their council representative from the revival until becoming Mayor.
Since being elected to council in 2017, I have been active with the Michigan Municipal League (MML) and the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) and was appointed council representative for SEMCOG in 2019, a position I held until I became Mayor in 2020.
I served on the SEMCOG Work Skills Task Force (2018/19) and attended many of the SEMCOG training programs including age friendly region, local government finance and road finance.
In 2019 I completed both the MSU Water School program and the MSU Citizen Planner course. I was also appointed to the SEMCOG Economic Development Strategy Task Force
In early 2020 I achieved the first level of the MML Elected Officials Academy
In 2023 I was invited to be on the SEMCOG Justice40 Communities Task Force. This has been a great opportunity to learn how our community can benefit from this initiative.
In 2019 I was appointed to serve as Mayor Pro Tem of Madison Heights, and in August 2020 I was appointed to Mayor. In 2021 I was elected to remain Mayor and in 2023 I was unopposed in my re-election for Mayor.
Now, the initiatives I proposed when I initially ran for council in 2017 are in progress. Not only is our tree canopy being restored, but we are a Tree City and a Silver Level Green Community. Our economic growth is strong with new developments expanding our diversity of businesses and improving our tax base. We have created more public safety positions and undertaken safety programs like "Hope not Handcuffs" and increased training for our first responders. Our city council is solid with each council member bringing a different point of view to the table. And so, I have decided it is time to expand my advocacy and run for County Commission.
Oakland County District 3 covers Hazel Park, Madison Heights and the eastern third of Troy. With your help. I look forward to increasing my range of advocacy for the safety and well-being of our community.
